Is Rocky Point Safe? Why We Keep Coming Back to Puerto Peñasco

If you’ve ever told someone you’re planning a trip to Rocky Point, you’ve probably heard the questions:

“Isn’t Mexico dangerous?”
“I heard Rocky Point isn’t safe.”

We’ve heard them, too.

But after traveling to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, for many years, we’ve come to know Rocky Point as a beautiful beach destination where we can relax, eat amazing food, listen to live music, shop, and enjoy the Sea of Cortez.

For many Arizona residents, Rocky Point is what we call “Arizona’s Beach.” It’s an easy road trip from Arizona, and we typically enter Mexico through Lukeville, Arizona, into Sonoyta, then continue along the main highway to Puerto Peñasco.

What We’ve Learned From Years of Visiting

We aren't going to tell you that nothing can ever happen while traveling anywhere. Just like any destination, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and stay informed.

What we can share is our experience: we've been traveling to Rocky Point for years, and we love it.

The key is simple, respect Mexico, follow the local laws and rules, and use common sense. You're visiting another country, so drive responsibly, follow posted signs and speed limits, carry the proper documents, and don't assume the rules are the same as they are in the United States.

We also recommend checking current travel advisories before your trip. The U.S. Department of State currently advises travelers to exercise increased caution in Mexico and provides specific guidance for travel between Lukeville and Puerto Peñasco.

Why We Love Rocky Point

For us, Rocky Point isn't about the rumors. It's about the experiences.

It's waking up to the Sea of Cortez, walking along the beach, relaxing by the pool, shopping, and enjoying incredible fresh seafood. It's listening to live music, enjoying a delicious cocktail by the water, and watching an unforgettable sunset.

And one of our favorite things? You can do as much—or as little—as you want.
